Jets Promote QB Coach Jeremy Bates To Offensive Coordinator

Jeremy Bates is getting another chance.

The New York Jets encouraged the quarterbacks coach to offensive coordinator Wednesday.

The group hired Rick Dennison as Steve Jackson and offensive line coach/run game coordinator as assistant defensive backs coach. Bates will continue his responsibilities.

Bates takes over an offense that ranked 28th overall and fought with consistency — leading in Morton’s dismissal after only 1 season.

Bates was hired last offseason by coach Todd Bowles to function together with the Jets’ quarterbacks after being out of football. The Bates has experience as an offensive coordinator, serving in that role for Seattle in 2010.

“Jeremy is a talented coach who has a sound comprehension of what it takes to build a successful offense,” Bowles said in a statement issued by the group. “Having spent , he offers continuity and has a good sense of what we will need to do to improve. I anticipate him working with our teachers that are offensive”

He’s also worked as an assistant under Mike Shanahan in Denver and Jon Gruden in Tampa Bay Throughout his Training career.

The former college quarterback at Tennessee and Rice is the son of former college and NFL defensive coordinator Jim Bates.

The question facing Jeremy Bates — and the franchise — is that the Jets’ quarterback would be next year. He helped Josh McCown have the best season of his NFL career that was lengthy, but the 38-year-old quarterback is scheduled for a free agent and uncertain to return. New York has Bryce Petty and Christian Hackenberg about the roster, but is considered the quarterback of the future.

The Jets could be interested in Washington’s Kirk Cousins if he becomes available with the Redskins trading for Kansas City’s Alex Smith. New York holds the No. 6 overall pick in the NFL draft in April, and could aim a quarterback with that choice.

Running back Matt Forte is unsure to return, and some other players on offense are free agents, including tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins, center Wesley Johnson, backup linemen Dakota Dozier and Jonotthan Harrison.

Bates got his coaching career started on Gruden’s employees in Tampa Bay, operating in quality control that was offensive prior to becoming the assistant quarterbacks coach in 2004. He went as Herman Edwards ‘quarterbacks coach the season to the Jets. In 2006, Bates combined Shanahan’s staff in Denver as an offensive assistant before becoming the Broncos’ quarterbacks coach the following year.

He moved to USC to be the Trojans’ head coach and quarterbacks coach under Carroll, who attracted Bates together with him to Seattle in 2010 to be the coordinator. After the Seahawks ranked among the NFL’s worst offenses, but he lasted just one year.

As the Bears ‘quarterbacks coach, a stint that again lasted 1 season when coach Lovie Smith was fired, Chicago hired Bates following a year out of football.

Bates spent another four seasons including Royal trekking the Continental Divide Trail from Mexico a soul-searching journey that took him roughly 5 1/2 weeks to complete.

“I think in the time it had been the ideal time for me to step apart, find out some things about myself, and have the chance to do some other things outside of football,” Bates said last June. “I did lots of hiking, a lot of traveling. I remained involved with the game. I’m not going to truly focus on my last four decades. At the conclusion of the day, I believe it made me a better man, and I believe it made me a much better teacher.”

Dennison served as Buffalo’s offensive coordinator, and functioned out of 2015-16 in the exact same part with Denver, as well as Houston out of 2010-13. He had been a long-time assistant for the Broncos, where he coached from 1995-2009 and worked to the staff from 2006-08 with Bates.

Jackson has spent 14 years including the last two as the assistant coach of Tennessee. He has worked for Buffalo, Washington and Detroit.
