Why Prince Fans Are Bashing On Justin Timberlake’s Super Bowl Halftime Performance

You were wrong if you thought media went to give a pass to Justin Timberlake.

Timberlake showcased lots of his hits but included a performance of Prince’s I Would Die 4 U using a giant projection of the artist onto a sheet behind the stage.

After Sheila E., a close Prince buddy, tweeted that Timberlake promised her there would be no Prince hologram within his series, many expressed relief on social networking.

But  the show really occurred and, although it was not a hologram, it was similar. And fans didn’t think the Purple One could approve.

On the other hand, the performance was praised by the Prince estate.   “Justin Timberlake, the NFL, and the City of Minneapolis used the scene and the city to provide a gorgeous hometown tribute to Prince,” reads a statement released Monday from the estate’s agents. “The two pieces of footage that appeared on the displays were licensed from the Purple Rain film and a classic performance in Syracuse, N.Y. “

In a 1998 interview with Guitar World magazine, Prince was asked directly about the usage of digital editing to “produce a scenario where you could jam with any artist from the past.” He was not a fan.

“That’s the very demonic thing imaginable,” he said. “Everything is as it is, and it should be. We would have lived at precisely the same age when I was meant with Duke Ellington. That entire virtual reality thing … it really is demonic. And I am not a demon. Additionally, what they did with this Beatles song (Free as a Bird), manipulating John Lennon’s voice to get him singing from across the grave … that’ll never happen to me personally. To stop that kind of thing from occurring is just another reason why I want artistic control.”

One Twitter user noted that “In death, Prince is still misunderstood.”

Jemele Hill, formerly of ESPN and now senior correspondent in The Undefeated, allow a GIF of Prince revealing disapproval talk for itself.

And his fans so are taking Timberlake’s actions and appear to be aware of their idol nicely.

Canadian celebrity Avan Jogia tweeted: “Prince didn’t like JT … JT did not like Prince… It is well documented… why would you place his (spirit) through that.”

Some suggested scenarios that could including Prince taking matters.

Nevertheless, the opinion was not shared with everyone. The set of Timberlake was gushed about by some in the crowd.

Tove Lo tweeted that the performance was “FIIIIIIRE.”

Reese Witherspoon consented, posting, “Wow @jtimberlake . . Only wow !”

And Ellen DeGeneres gave her friend a shout-out, saying that he “just killed it.”
